Healthy digestion is the foundation of a happy life. If our gut isn't functioning, our immunity and mental health also suffer. Discover prebiotic inulin and find out how it can help you on your journey to healthier digestion.
Digestive problems are a big topic during any holiday. Especially during Christmas, we tend to indulge a little more, often neglect regular exercise, and eat things we usually avoid completely during the year.
It's no wonder that our digestion bears the brunt of it. However, it's important to take care of our gut and digestive tract health all year round. If our digestion isn't working properly, neither is our immunity, and our mental health and overall vitality suffer.
Do you know how such an inconspicuous plant as chicory can help you with healthy digestion?
What is the difference between probiotics and prebiotics?
The root of a small plant with blue flowers contains the polysaccharide inulin, which has proven prebiotic effects. This means that, among other things, the prebiotic inulin supports the growth of healthy bacteria in the large intestine.
|
What are probiotics? Probiotics are beneficial bacteria residing in our intestines. These are living organisms that ensure not only the proper function of the intestines but also a favourable environment for the proper course of digestive processes. Probiotics optimize cholesterol levels and have beneficial effects on immunity. |
|
What are prebiotics? Prebiotics are food for beneficial probiotics. For healthy bacteria in the gut to perform their functions, they need suitable food. And that is soluble fibre, also known as prebiotic fibre. Soluble plant fibre (like inulin), unlike insoluble fibre, has the ability to absorb water, thereby increasing the volume of food in the intestines and making one feel fuller. Prebiotic fibre helps not only overall digestion but also regular bowel movements. |
Inulin is a natural soluble fibre, which is extracted precisely from the root of the small chicory plant. Compared to other types of fibre that pass through the digestive tract undigested, inulin is fully digested in the large intestine by the intestinal microflora.
However, insoluble fibre also has its importance for digestion and can also act as a kind of "brush" that mechanically cleans the intestines. Insoluble fibre also aids in optimal excretion and supports intestinal peristalsis. It is mainly found in legumes, bran, seeds, vegetables, and fruits.

How does inulin benefit digestion?
Soluble fibre inulin is used as a food source by beneficial bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. This increases their number in the intestine at the expense of harmful pathogenic microorganisms, and inulin thus contributes to a healthy intestinal microflora, which is essential, among other things, for the proper functioning of the immune system.
The main benefits of soluble fibre inulin are:
- Support for the growth and function of beneficial gut bacteria,
- reduction of the glycemic index of ingested food, which also helps regulate blood glucose,
- more efficient nutrient absorption,
- a longer and more pronounced feeling of fullness,
- active slowing of carbohydrate and fat absorption from ingested food,
- help in lowering cholesterol levels,
- acceleration of the passage of consumed food through the large intestine – reducing the risk of constipation and flatulence.
Slovaks consume too little fibre
The ideal daily dose of fibre (overall) ranges from 25 to 35 g. The exact number also depends on age and gender. However, Slovaks are far from this figure. On average, we consume only about 15 g of fibre daily.
Fibre as a whole, however, has many positive effects on our health. It can help us lose weight, lower blood cholesterol, help prevent diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, and also improve digestive tract health.
